For over the last twenty five years Pixar has given us things that are part of our cultural soul. From Woody and Buzz to Dory to the best Marvel before Marvel in The Incredibles, these are characters that speak to a part of us as much any live movie character can be. Those films have set a certain bar for Pixar and when they don’t meet it, not only do we not get a sequel, we get disappointed at what we see. I for one don’t think they have ever delivered a miss, but instead in my eyes there are some of their movies that are just not my cup of tea. Us Pixar fans though can’t be sustained on action figures and fish forever and we need something new that we will give us that feeling we once had, if they could just capture that magic again.

Well abracadabra, your wish is granted as you can add a couple elves to the list of Pixar characters you are going to want more of as we are given Onward. Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland) seems like how most of us were in High School, shy and unsure of himself. Today though things will be different, as today is his sixteenth birthday, you know they day a boy becomes a man. Things start off as normal as they can be as things just don’t seem to go his way. Before leaving for school his older brother Barley (Chris Pratt) tells him that he will anoint him a man after school, but for Ian he has other goals, mainly stepping out of himself and trying to be seen. Things end just as they began, but when Ian and Barley’s mom Laurel (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) gives them a gift that their dad wanted them to have, it is going to start an adventure of epic proportions. With the gift is instructions on how to bring back their dad for a day, but when it only works only half way, Ian and Barley must take a trip to complete the spell. It’s along the way that they make discoveries about themselves and help others as well on this adventure that will change them forever.

Being the introvert that I am, I don’t take many adventures myself, so I am always up to take one through someone else’s eyes. Onward is not just any adventure though, for me it’s one that hits the sweet spot, as it feels like the Dungeons and Dragons movie I never knew I wanted. I say that, because as someone who once played I know things can get dark, but not in this world. Instead this world is filled with magic, heart and a message of belief in one’s self that is a lot of fun along the way. What that means to me, is a Pixar film that is not only my cup of tea, but also feels like it could be one of my favorite of all time. I thoroughly enjoyed being in this world and when it was all said and done I only wanted to take another adventure with my two new favorite elves, something I think you will agree with too.
