I understand, I do, kids are back at school, you get a mom and dad night out and you want to see a movie without talking dogs and fish. So when the weekend comes you don’t want to see any animated movies, you want grown up action and adventure. When you end up dishing out your hard earned money for what amounts to movie garbage like “Ben-Hur”, and not-much-better movies like “Suicide Squad”, don’t you feel the least bit cheated?
Seriously, take my advice, go see “Kubo and the Two Strings”! Movies like this, while not as classic as “The Iron Giant” or in the same league as Pixar, it is certainly in the same ballpark. This movie has the afore mentioned action and adventure, along with swordplay, the power of storytelling, great family drama, Matthew McConaughey, and a monkey. You can’t tell me you’re not interested in at least one of those things.
This stop-motion marvel cost 60 million to make, and as of this writing has only made around 17 million so far. It deserves better, it deserves more! Go see it, with or without the kids, you will enjoy it more than almost everything else playing in theaters now. You may even feel less guilty about how much you spend on concessions if you see a movie you can honestly say is worth recommending to friends and family.
