Hulu
The Order- This movie follows an FBI agent (Jude Law) investigating a string of bold bank robberies that he believes are connected to a domestic terrorist gang. Based on a true story, The Order tracks Law and his team as they clash with white supremacists and race to prevent a violent uprising.
The Monkey– From earlier this year, one of my favorite movies as well as one of the best Stephen King adaptations. The film follows the lives of twin brothers who inherit a wind-up drum banging monkey. But it’s not a toy (don’t ever call it that), and when the drum bangs, heads will roll. Literally. The film is filled will Rube Goldberg style deaths that would make the creators of Final Destination proud. Also in her limited time, Tatiana Maslany simply crushes it every second she is on screen. It gets a little silly and maybe a bit too outlandish by the end, but it’s still funny as hell.
HBO MAX
Companion- Everyone loves a good love story, and Companion delivers—just with a twist. The plot is intriguing, full of surprises, and manages to stay both funny and engaging throughout. It feels like not enough people have discovered this one yet, but it’s definitely a movie you should add to your queue right away.
High and Low– One of the Akira Kurosawa films that didn’t have samurai in it, this is a tense thriller that was just remade by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington in Highest 2 Lowest. When a struggling business man is called and told his son is being held for ransom, but it turns out not to be his son that was taken, what will he do? Brilliantly shot and a strong performance by Toshirô Mifune who proves he is just as threatening holding a phone or piece of paper as his is holding a sword.
Netflix
K-Pop Demon Hunters- I’m going to assume you’ve already seen this, since everyone seems to be singing along to its soundtrack. If not, what are you waiting for? K-Pop Demon Hunters follows three K-pop superstars who moonlight as secret demon hunters, protecting their fans from supernatural threats. With dazzling animation and a soundtrack that’s impossible to shake, this is the can’t-miss movie of the moment
The Greatest Night in Pop– This is an all-access pass to the past as we follow Lionel Richie as he recollects what it took to bring one of the seminal songs of the 80’s to life. From inception of “We are the World” to the video footage of the one incredible night when some of the biggest rock and pop stars of the day came together in the name of goodwill and charity. There is some great recordings of what it was like to have a meeting with Michael Jackson, chimpanzee’s and all. You also get to see the genius that was Quincy Jones on full display. The story and the stories inside the story are the stuff of legend, as told by some the legends that were there that night.
